Mycenae: The legendary home of the Atrides
The 'Golden City' of Homer, the Ancient capital of the Mycenaean Civilization. Starting point of the Trojan expedition of the Achaeans. Ancient history comes to life in Agamemnon's Mycenae, with the remarkable beehive Tombs and the 3,000 year old Lionesses' Gate. According to Homer and Aeschylus 'Oresteia', the city of Mycenae was founded by Perseus who killed the hideous snake-haired Medusa.
Mycenae was first settled by Neolithic people in the 6th millennium BC. Between 2,100-1,900 BC Greece was invaded by people of Indo-European stock who came from Anatolia to Greece. The invaders brought their culture to Mycenae and other mainland settlements. This new civilisation is known as Mycenaean civilization named after Mycenae. Archaeological finds indicate that the palaces of Mycenaean kingdoms were destroyed around 1,200 BC.
