Cape Sounion 70 km (55 mi) southeast of Athens with the Temple of Poseidon god of the sea. | ||||||||
The Temple of Poseidon was built between 444 and 440 BC on the site where a cult of the god had existed since early times.It is Doric, peripteral (13 columns on the long sides and 6 on the narrow ones) and bore sculpted decoration with mythological subjects.Today only 15 of the original columns and a small part of its sculptured decoration have survived.To the northeast stood the temple of Athena, the foundations of which are preserved. | ||||||||
Must see: The Temple of Poseidon has immersed and continues to impress all who visit it, or behold it from the sea. One of its most illustrious visitors was Lord Byron, who even inscribed his name on one of the door jambs.Sightseers are numerous today; many of them come to enjoy the romantic sunset seen from here. | ||||||||
