Poros is a small island- peninsula at the very edge of the Saronic gulf. It is 29 nautical miles from Piraeus and has 43 km of coast. A verdant island with some hills is an ideal spot for romantic excursions. Relaxation and quiet holidays. | ||||||||
Poros actually comprises two islands, linked by a very narrow isthmus . In antiquity the islands were known as Apairia and Kalaureia ( birthplace of Theseus). Here one of the famous orator Demosthenes, met his death. In the 7th century BC Poros (Kalaureia) was the center of an amhictyony of seven cities. Poros played an significant role in the Greek War for Independence in 1821. | ||||||||
Must see: Temple of Poseidon on the southeast side of the island, 8 km from the Poros. In this Temple Demosthenes the famous Athenians orator committed suicide by taking poison. Half an hour to the south is the monastery of Zoodochos Pege (life-giving source) with its iconostasis which dates to the 18th century. | ||||||||
