Nauplion is 120 km southwest of Athens in Peloponnese .It is built in the east end of Argolicos gulf . Nauplion was the first capital of the Greek State after the War of Independence in 1821. Nauplion has retained its old-world charm with its steep streets, Neoclassic houses and historical buildings. | ||||||||
Nauplion is situated at the east end of Acrponauplia peninsula.The first inhabitants were settled here between the 3rd and 2nd centuries B . Nauplion in ancient times was the port of Argos. In Byzantine times the fortress of Acronauplia was built. The small island of Burtzi was linked to Acronauplia by a long chain which closed off the harbor. The Palamidi fortress was fortified by the Venitians in the 17th century and is connected to the lower hill of Acronauplia by 837 steps, galleries and successive gates. Above the entrance of Palamidi a relief of the lion of St.Marcus, emblem of Venice can be seen. | ||||||||
Must see: Palamidi fortress, Burti, Lion of Bavars, the Byzantine churches of Saint Spyridon, and Metamorphosis to Sotiros. The museum of Nauplion was built in 1713 by the Venitians and it contains many archaeological finds from Mycenae, Tyrinth and Argos. The Popular Museum contains costumes, arms, ancient maps of the area etc. | ||||||||
